This is about one of my great-grandfathers on my mother's side, Nicholaus Weber. Nicholaus Weber was born on October 16, 1842 in the town of Irsch Bei Beurig, Rheinland, Prussia. The town is located about 20 miles southwest of the city of Trier in Germany. He died November 21, 1918 in Madison, Wisconsin. He was buried in Resurrection Cemetery, Wisconsin (see headstone).
If you check out the Weber's in Irsch family tree (see here), his immediate family came from the area around Irsch, Germany. It appears that most of the family remained in Germany. According to records (see note below) and in Weber's in Irsch family tree, both parents died in Irsch, along with 3 of his older siblings, Joannes, Anna, and Elisabetha. However, since the microfilmed records stopped in 1912, I had no way to determine where his other siblings lived and died.
One of the things I have been trying to do is to trace the migration of Nicholaus from Germany to the USA. This is the time line that I have so far:
1842 - Nicholaus was born in Irsch, Germany [1]
1845 - His wife Katharina Fisch was also born in Irsch, Germany [1]
1862 - Anna Fisch (the sister of Katharina) and her husband Peter Kettenhofen immigrated to Wisconsin.[2] I believe Anna's mother Marcia Thome also came with them.
1866 - John Weber (their oldest child) was born in Wisconsin.[3]
1870 - Census record shows: Nicholaus, male citizen of US (28), Catharina (25), John (4), Margaret, Nicholaus (born 1/1870). [3]
1873 - Henry Weber (my grandfather) was born [4]
1918 - Nicholaus died in Madison, Wisconsin. He was buried in Resurrection Cemetery, Wisconsin
Note: I was able to get much of this information from registers of the Catholic church in Irsch. These registers were microfilmed by the LDS Genealogical Society of Utah and I was able to view them at a local LDS Family History Center. In addition, information was available at the LDS FamilySearch.org website.
